Shuisheng HOU, Ph.D, is a Research Professor and academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. Born in October 1959 in Sanyuan County of Shaanxi Province, he has long been engaged in the research on waterfowl breeding and farming technologies. He established a highly efficient breeding technology system for meat ducks, which enables China's meat duck breeding technology to reach the internationally leading level. He has successively developed three new duck breeds: the "Z-Type Beijing Duck" suitable for processing Beijing roast duck, the "Zhongxu Grassland White Feather Meat Duck" suitable for whole-duck food processing, and the "Zhongxin White Feather Meat Duck" suitable for segmented food processing. These breeds account for over one-third of the national market share, breaking the monopoly of foreign breeds. The new Beijing Duck breed, specifically bred for roast duck, has captured approximately 50% of the market in Beijing. He established the "Meat Duck Feeding Standard" (NY/T 2122), which has driven the standardization of China's meat duck industry.
Dr. Shuisheng HOU has published more than 200 papers as the first or corresponding author, in journals including Nature Communications, etc. He serves as the Chief Scientist of the National Waterfowl Industry Technology System and Director of the Key Laboratory of Animal Genetics, Breeding, and Reproduction (Poultry) under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs. He was honored as the National Advanced Individual in Agriculture in 2016, and received the inaugural National Award for Innovation and Excellence in 2017. As the primary contributor, he has won one National Science and Technology Progress Award (Second Class) and two Beijing Science and Technology Awards (First Class).
