Brief Introduction


Institute of Animal Science (IAS) of Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS) established in 1957. It is a national animal husbandry scientific research institution.

Missions

IAS focuses on national food safety, effective supply of animal products, and high-quality development of animal husbandry. The institute carries out research in the field of animal genetic resources and breeding, animal biotechnology and reproduction, animal nutrition and feed, pratacultural science, veterinary medicine, and animal product quality and safety It emphasizes on solving the major scientific and technological problems for national animal husbandry industry, and makes all efforts to promote scientific and technological innovation, international cooperation, achievements transformation, personnel training and the construction of think tank.

Faculty

IAS has a strong scientific research team, comprising 182 investigators, including 2 academicians of Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) and more than 30 national talents. IAS has more than 600 graduate students and about 46 postdoctoral fellows.

Research Platform

IAS has two State Key Laboratories and the National Farm Animal Germplasm Bank. It also has a large-scale instrument and equipment sharing platform named central laboratory, which equipped with more than 170 equipment, with a total value of 116 million yuan.

Achievements

By the end of 2022, IAS had won 31 national awards, 24 of which were first completed, 129 provincial and ministerial-level scientific and technological innovation achievements, 7 new varieties of animals and plants and more than 550 national patents which include 350 invention patents, and also published more than 4200 scientific papers and nearly 360 books.

International Cooperations

The institute has established several international cooperation platforms, such as the International Research Center on Dairy Science, the CAAS-ICRAF Joint Laboratory on Agroforestry and Sustainable Animal Husbandry, the CAAS-ILRI Joint Laboratory on Livestock and Forage Genetic Resources, and the China-Ireland Dairy Science and Technology Center. It had hosted large international conferences such as the International Symposium on Dairy Cow Nutrition and Milk Quality.

IAS has successively established good cooperative relations with nearly 40 countries or faculties all around the world, including United States, Canada, Russia, Ireland and so on.
