Duck meat consumption is second only to pork and chicken in China, accounting for approximate 8% of total meat consumption with an annual slaughter of 3.5 billion ducks, whereas the meat duck breeding source is highly dependent on imports. The team of academician Hou Shuisheng has developed the "China Animal Grassland White-finned Meat Duck" line using China’s meat duck genetic resources by quantitative genetics breeding theory and modern breeding equipment and technology and completely reversed the situation of relying on imported meat duck breeding sources to ensure the safety of the meat duck breeding industry. China Animal Grassland White Feather Meat Duck consists of four specialized strains, including S1, S2, S3 and S4, with the characters of high growth rate, high breast and leg meat proportion and low skin fat rate, which are suitable for overall processing of salted duck and plate duck and other foods. Its parent breeder ducks own the capacities of more than 280 eggs at 75 weeks of age, 3496 g of body weigh at 42 days of age, 1.92:1 of feed to meat ratio, 98.6% of survival rate and and 25.5% of lean meat rate, reaching the international leading level.
