Grassland Science Research Laboratory is oriented towards the major needs of China’s grass and pasture development and ecological environment construction, aiming at the frontiers of international research in the field of forage germplasm resources and genetic breeding, focusing on the conservation of important forage germplasm resources such as alfalfa, genetic improvement, breeding of new varieties, forage resistance physiology and ecological mechanism, forage processing and its quality control mechanism and technology, etc., as well as solving global, strategic and critical technical problems that restrict the development of China’s forage industry to lead forage science and technology innovation, enhance the international influence of China’s forage genetic breeding research, and promote the modernization of grass and pasture industry and science and technology innovation development. Since the establishment of the institute, the laboratory has collected more than 20,000 introduced forage germplasm resources, evaluated and appraised more than 5,000 forage germplasm resources, and has cultivated 28 nationally approved herbage varieties, such as “Zhong Wan”, “Zhong Mu”, “Zhong Ping” and “Zhong Sha”. The Zhong Mu series of alfalfa varieties have been promoted in nine provinces and regions in China with a total planting area of over 30 million mu, making it the largest domestic series of alfalfa varieties promoted. The main research directions are collection, conservation, evaluation, identification and innovative utilization of forage germplasm resources; discovery of molecular markers for important traits of high yield and quality in forage; discovery and functional research of excellent genetic resources of important forage; selection and breeding of new forage varieties of alfalfa and other important forage; physiological and nutritional regulation of alfalfa and other forage; forage processing and its quality control mechanism and technology.
