On April 2nd, IAS, the Danish Veterinary and Food Authority (DVFA), and the Danish Embassy in China jointly organized a seminar on animal disease monitoring and management in China and Denmark. Experts from IAS, China Agricultural University, the China Animal Disease Control Center, and the DVFA delivered keynote presentations. The seminar was chaired by Mr. Rasmus Berg Larsen, Sector Counsellor for Food and Agriculture at the Danish Embassy in China, with Mr. Jia Yaxiong, Division Chief of the Division of Science and Technology Management of IAS, attending and giving opening remarks.
Jia Yaxiong highlighted the extensive opportunities for cooperation and exchange between China and Denmark in the areas of animal disease monitoring and management. He noted that this conference is a crucial part of the Strategic Sector Cooperation (SSC) project, with the Institute of Animal Science of CAAS being a key partner in this initiative. The institute has organized extensive participation of domestic livestock industry personnel, fostering active learning and exchange to promote the joint development and progress of the livestock industries in both China and Denmark. Jia expressed hope that this occasion would mark the beginning of a new chapter in agricultural cooperation between the two countries.
At the session, Anette Haurum, the SSC project leader from DVFA, detailed the SSC project's key objectives and expected outcomes. She highlighted the aim of the project to provide a reference to Chinese competent department about enhancing animal disease surveillance, improving the traceability of animal products, and ensuring food safety. Bing Guoxia, Director of Division of Disease Surveillance at the China Animal Disease Control Center, alongside Mette Schebye Skriver, Special Veterinary Advisor at the DVFA, discussed the veterinary management and animal disease monitoring frameworks within China and Denmark. Professor Liu Yumei from China Agricultural University presented her research on compensation policies for culling and farmers' preventative practices against African Swine Fever. The session also facilitated in-depth dialogue on farm biosecurity measures, oversight management, and government subsidies, fostering a collaborative environment for sharing insights and strategies.
In closing, Zhu Zengyong, Chief Scientist of the Animal Husbandry Economics Research Team of IAS, delivered a summary of the conference. He highlighted that the successful hosting of the event represented an excellent start of the collaboration between the two sides. He expressed that both sides will continue to deepen cooperation in animal husbandry and veterinary medicine and make greater contributions to the prevention and control of major animal diseases and the development of animal health.
