The Joint Laboratory on Livestock and Poultry Genetic Resources and Forage Genetic Resources was established in May 2004, jointly initiated by the Institute of Animal Science and Veterinary Medicine, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS), and the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI).

The laboratory's research focuses on livestock and poultry resources, genetic breeding, as well as forage resources and breeding. It primarily conducts collaborative research in the field of livestock and poultry genetic resources in China, East Asia, and Southeast Asia. The laboratory also co-organizes domestic and international training programs, seminars, and academic conferences. Additionally, it provides research equipment and technical support for ILRI's biotechnology projects in Asia, as required.
