Academician Ziyi Zhang, born in March 1925, is the expert of animal sciences. He is the professor, Ph. D. supervisor of Institute of Animal Sciences, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CASS). He graduated from agricultural pre-class in 1945 and obtained the bachelor degree in 1948 from Hokkaido Imperial University. After completion of graduate study in Hokkaido Imperial University from 1948 to 1952, he returned to China in 1952. He has served as technician of 1st grade and the leader of feed research group of Northern China Institute of Agricultural Sciences, and then associate professor, and professors in the Institute of Animal Sciences, CAAS.
Mr. Zhang was the member of standing committee of China Association of Animal and Veterinary Sciences, secretary of general, standing deputy president, president and honored president of Animal Science Association during 1980 to 2001. Now he is the consultant of Agricultural Application of Computer Association in Chinese Association of Agricultural Science Societies and Professional Committee of Agricultural Experts for Chinese Association of Automation, and vice president of China Feed Industry Association, etc. Mr. Zhang also was the member of the 7th and 8thNational Committee of the Political Consultative Conference, the professional consultant and member of 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 6th, 7th Committee of Science and Technology of MOA and deputy director of the 1st Technical Committee of Feed Industrial Standardization. In 1997, Mr. Zhang was elected as member of Chinese Academy of Engineering in agriculture, textile and environmental protection division. He became the member of Ethics Committee of Chinese Academy of Engineering in 1998.
Since the 9th Five-year plan, Mr. Zhang has served as principal investigators of many key projects funded by National Programs for Science and Technology Development. He also participated and hosted projects to plan and demonstrate national strategy for animals and feed science and technology. He is the one of the founders for Animal Nutrition Association. During the 6th and 9th Five-year plan, 4 of his projects have been credited with National Science and Technology Progress Award, and 15 projects have been credited with Science and Technology Progress Award of Provincial Level. Mr. Zhang has published 28 books and 260 journal papers. According to his contribution, he has been honored by Beijing Government, China Feed Industry Association, Chinese Association of Agricultural Science Societies, etc. In 1999, he was awarded with Outstanding Contribution to China Agricultural Science and Education Fund.
Mr. Zhang has supervised 8 master students and 15 doctoral students. After 7-year hard work, he completed the “Feed Science in China” in 2001 as the chief-editor. The book has been awarded with the 2nd prize of the 10th National Science and Technology Books by State Press and Publications Bureau. In 1997, Mr. Zhang was elected as member of Chinese Academy of Engineering.
