The State Foreign Talent and Research Platform for Extension of Chinese Simmental

The Institute of Animal Science and Veterinary, Chinese Academy of Agriculture Science was approved as the State Foreign Talent and Rsearch platform for the demonstration and extension of Chinese Simmental by the State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs (SAFEA) in 2003, 2008 and 2013, respectively. The objective of this platform is to improve the performance of Chinese Simmental and accelerate the breeding progress by the introduction of foreign talent, technical knowledge and advanced management experiments.

The Chinese Simmental is a dual purpose breed that has the characteristics of fast growth, crude feed tolerance and adaptability, which was passed examination & approval by National Committee for Livestock and Poultry Genetic Resources in 2001. The research work on Chinese Simmental was awarded as high grade Prize for Progress in Science and Technology in 2002 and 2003 by Beijing city and China goverment respectively.

Economic performance: So far the population size has reached above 1,000,000 and the average milk yield come to 4300 kg, High-yield individuals can milk 11740 kg, Whole herd fat percent is 4.0%. Daily gain is 1000-1200 g. The dressed percentage is 60%, and meat percentage is 50%. Farmers fedding Chinese Simmental have gotten very good profits. The seed herd annually provides 250 top bulls used for breeding and cross with yellow cattle. This is one of the major breeds designated by Ministry of Agriculture for Chinese cattle industry.
